Enslavement of Self
The price on our society of today’s marketing campaigns by big business is that we’ve effectively done the legwork in enslavement of ourselves to fulfilling that which pleasures us or moreso those pleasures which we have been told will fulfill our needs for entertainment, identity and self-indulgence. Every so often however, we realize what position we’ve put ourselves into and fight back, the most recent being the 1960s-1970s, where ‘revolution’ (coupled with extensive narcotics experimentation) was established, where a growing minority of participants rebelled against corporate structure, methods and the values of free market capitalism.
In the end though, the majority of those radical thinkers whose so-called freedom philosophies have become encumbered by their own needs of survival and success. Corporate business has won and by assimilating those hipsters it has essentially perfected the means in which to control population’s desires. We’re to blame. As our society’s values changing over the course of a century or our attitudes became more liberal, we’ve given big business the edge to tell us how we plan to live our life. Generation after generation has a void in their life greater than the one before as their identity is stripped away and the creative genius in all of us is stepped on or covered up. Is it a surprise how an epidemic of depression is sweeping over today’s youth? We’ve told them we love you, but you’re expendable.
“So Jon… what are you saying, drop all of our luxuries and trappings?” Although depending on your beliefs you may need to consider such things, no, that isn’t what I am saying. At this point, if you don’t have a cellphone in our society’s normal settings, you’re gonna be hurting when you move out to develop your own business. The current culture demands immediate satisfaction. Waiting and patience isn’t a part of that philosophy, it’s sad, but it is our daily reality. Big business feeds this tendency and with it comes a growing tension.
Think about how many times on the road 10 years ago you drove where people were courteous enough to allow you passage if your acceleration was beyond theirs. Now consider how many times a week or even a day you have to deal with that driver that rides your tail to get to the point 40 seconds quicker than everyone else (statistically the average time saved on the average 15 mile drive per day to work when a driver is in excess of the speed limit by 10mph is 40 seconds!).
Immediate satisfaction is the name of the game and big business understands that. “I’m not a participant in this frame of mind” - I ask you, have you ever eaten a microwavable TV dinner? Does your cellphone have instant text messages or even video streams? Are you using the Internet right now?! We’re all participants. It has become engrained in our culture. Additional example: Compact Discs have a approximate standard by which music tracks should stay in length; CDs longer than 40 minutes in total length typically do not do well in market - society wants a fast hit and cannot stay attentive long enough to take in more than 40 minutes worth of content.
We as a world must establish a balance between what we need and what we want. Set your own limitations, write them down! When you hear a radio commercial in the car that is telling you to get down to that car lot and buy the latest and greatest, switch the station or turn it off and say, “No, I won’t”. It seems silly, but that is one more customer they didn’t suck in.
Don’t feed into the hype. Make your purchase or entertainment decisions instead of allowing someone else to make them for you. Embrace your God-given individualality and uniqueness.

I’d like to add to the future EX-microwave oven users out there, everything you think you need to cook in a microwave, can be cooked and WILL taste better in a conventional oven either electric or gas.
Um, Part of what your saying, IMO is that we don’t think about the consequences of our actions. As anyone knows in physics, action == reaction. therefore let your reaction be something beneficial to the planet. I am not saying to suck up to Al Gore. But hear him out eh?

I know a lot of “good web designers” say Myspace sux; but I would counter with, where else are you going to get such a myriad of free music you never heard before? Sure the xhtml has serious problems, we won’t see the end of that for awhile. I hope Tom ™ can figure it out… But it is a legit source of creativity, outside of the CMSM (which is by definition not in the public interest) Many real bands have their Official Band Websites there currently.
I haven’t driven a vehicle since 1991. I could easily drive, and better than some licensed drivers.
I don’t have a cell phone. (are there really “cells” anymore? I think what it is..is a microwave communications device, with an address. that would better define the “cell phone” -IMO. But I Mostly hate them because idiots (who never had a CB radio) drive around drunk or upset with em and crash and kill / injure innocent folks. I personally use copper land-line, or Ham Radiotoday. Oh yeah, DSL / CABLE.
I umm, produce a cable tv show… (I won’t tell you which yet, the cyber adept of you can easily track me down)

I say stock the media, follow them around with high tech toys. You know where their hangouts are, the Airport on New Years, The Malls ON X-mas, etc, etc… YOU KNOW WHERE. So the question is why don’t you shove a MEDIA BLACKOUT sign in their faces when they interview you, or when their camera angel is pointed towards your part of the crowd? WHY?
I think it’s going to take kids from the 60’s and 70’s (personally I am from the 60’s) to use technology to shove this situation back in their faces (COORDINATED) e.g. “cell phones” and “two-ways” tracking CMSM camera angles, and monitoring TV live. THAT IS THE KEY — LIVE!!!

Definitely a lot to take in, but well said all the same.
I think it is quite appropriate for all of us to take a step back and analyze how much we rely on, on whatever it is that we now rely on - and is it our choice, or have we let someone else make it for us?
